The New Valley Tavern
A while ago, Janette told me that The New Valley Tavern, the bar in the strip mall on the corner from my house, has karaoke on Thursday nights. I've been wanting to check it out but because of the job situation and the fact that it gets insanely crouded I didn't. Well, since I now have a job I decided to check it out last night.
Jamie and I got to the bar at about 9:30 and it was packed! We couldn't find a place to stand let alone sit. Eventually we found a table and I picked out my songs which was difficult because the book did not have much to choose from. It didn't even have Martina McBride! It had a few Madonna songs but they were all post 1994 so I won't sing them. :o)
The first song I sang was "Heads Carolina, Tails California". I had fun with it because I was so happy to sing and be in front of people but the bar was just not a great karaoke bar. It was strange. THEN the KJ went and played about 3 songs in between each singer. There were only about 20 people signed up so I guess she thought she had time to waste. My next song was a Brittney Spears song but the track skipped half of a verse and went into the chorus so I asked them to start it over again. They did and the same thing happened so the guy who the girl was working for told me that it must have been just the way that track was recorded. I told him he was wrong because two lines were coming on the screen as one. (You veteran karaoke singers know what I am talking about). So, I asked if I could just do a different song since his track was recorded incorrectly and I really wanted to sing. He reluctantly agreed and I sang some Faith Hill. After that I was ready to go. Jamie was too so we left.
WAIT there is more! I have not mentioned the best part!! I wanted a Lektrik Lei but the bar did not have UV Blue Vodka. So, after hearing my discription of the drink, the bartender (who was not bad to look at mind you) said he could make something for me. He used rasperry vodka, pineapple juice and orange juice then added that blue stuff I can't spell but the stuff that is used in blue margaritas. I've decided to call it an "East Coast Lei" becacuse Jamie told me that she checked with a few state stores* and no one has heard of the special vodka. She even checked while she was in Jersey and New York last weekend. The stores told her it must be regional.
*In Pennsylvania, distribution of alcohol is very regulated and, as such, can only be purchased at a state store. Bars have very strict rules too. For example, a bar cannot serve alcohol on Sundays unless they also serve food (not just apetizers).
